Camden robs Owls, gives to Kewpies

In its final home game of the season under the lights, the Hickman boys soccer program honored its 12 seniors yesterday. There was the standard pregame ceremony in which the seniors gave their mothers a bouquet of flowers and posed for pictures with their parents and Coach Larry Thornburg.

There was also a homemade poster for each of the senior players and the lone senior cheerleader on display along the chain link fence near the entrance to Hickman Field.
Many of the posters were decorated with youth soccer team pictures and action shots. There were pictures of Evan Camden playing soccer on his poster, but there were also images that showcased Camden’s life off the field.

Included on the poster was a 1994 photo of 5-year-old Camden dressed as Robin Hood with face-paint facial hair. Thirteen years later things have not changed much.

Camden played the role of hero again yesterday when he scored the game-winning goal in Hickman’s 3-0 victory over Marshall. He now has a team-high 12 goals on the season.

"You know, if not a goal, at least something is going to happen - a second chance or even an assist" - when Camden has the ball, fellow senior captain Harrison Cunningham said.
Camden scored in the 31st minute when he ran onto the ball and one-touched it past Marshall senior goalkeeper Mike Sartor who had come off his line to challenge for the ball. The goal was setup by a nice pass into the penalty box by senior Ben Dierkes.

"Which is good for him because he never plays midfield," said Camden of his friend Dierkes. "So for him to get an assist, that’s pretty neat."

Dierkes plays stopper, but on Senior Night he and a number of his classmates played out of position because Thornburg decided to play just seniors in the first half. In a regular game, about half of the senior class starts for the Kewpies.

"I liked the part about playing all together with just seniors because it’s the last chance we all have just to play with only the seniors before we go into district play," John Corbin said. "It was nice just to kind of say goodbye to everyone, even though it was only for a half."

In the second half, Thornburg played the nine juniors and sophomores on the varsity squad. Goalkeeper Justin Schmidt and sweeper Kyle Boger were the two seniors on the field to start the second half. The only other senior to play in the final 40 minutes of the game was Boger’s sub, David Garman.

A pair of juniors added insurance goals for Hickman (8-6-1) in the second half.

Mason Morawitz scored the second goal of the game in the 61st minute when he took a pass from Jervis Atagana and slotted the ball past Sartor.

Atagana also scored the final goal of the game in the 72nd minute on a nice individual effort. He dribbled into the box and took a shot, but Sartor got a piece of it. Atagana beat a number of Marshall defenders to the rebound and buried the ball in the back of the net.

Thornburg used the game against Marshall (5-9) to evaluate players before the Class 3 District 10 Tournament.

"I just watched," Thornburg said. "Districts are coming up and I’m starting to look for players to be the starting team for the districts, and I just wanted to see these guys play tonight. So I just thoroughly enjoyed it."

The Kewpies sit atop the district standings with a 4-0 record. Their final regular-season game against a district opponent is Oct. 16 in Jefferson City against Helias. The district tournament begins Oct. 27 and the top two teams receive a first-round bye.

Hickman soccer places third in Illinois

Thanks to a pair of penalty-kick shootout wins, the Hickman boys soccer team placed third at the Quincy Tournament in Illinois.

The Kewpies (7-6-1) opened play Friday night against O’Fallon, Ill., Township. At the end of regulation, the game was tied at one, but Kewpies prevailed in the shootout. Evan Camden scored Hickman’s lone goal on an assist from Taylor Cox. The Kewpies could not carry the momentum over to yesterday morning, though, as Richwoods High out of Peoria, Ill., handed them a 3-0 loss.

Hickman responded in its final match of the event behind the play of Camden. Against Morton, Ill., Camden scored three goals , but it was not enough to give the Kewpies a win in regulation, as a 3-3 tie forced another shootout. The Kewpies prevailed 4-2 in the shootout, with Camden, Matt Baker, Graham Lloyd and Morawitz converting.

Morawitz had a pair of assists against Morton.

Hickman 2, Camdenton 1: The Kewpies (3-3) got a pair of first-half goals from Matt Baker and held on to win. Baker’s first goal came on a penalty kick, and his second was unassisted. The Lakers got a late second-half goal but could not score again.

At the beginning of Monday’s practice, Hickman boys soccer Coach Larry Thornburg asked his players to perform a standard drill.


One player lobbed the ball to his teammate, who was supposed to trap it with his thigh and volley it back with the inside of his foot.


It was not pretty. Balls bounced everywhere. The only player who tossed the ball and didn’t get a workout chasing errant volleys was Matt Baker’s partner. Baker trapped and volleyed with such precision that Thornburg had him demonstrate the drill to his teammates.


Yesterday, Baker showed the fans at Hickman Field how to lead a team to victory in the school’s home opener. He recorded two assists and scored one goal in the Kewpies come-from-behind 5-2 victory over Smith-Cotton. Hickman improved to 2-3 with the win.


"I played Matt at" forward "wing, which gives him a little more freedom than playing him in the middle," Thornburg said.


Baker, a sophomore who celebrated his 16th birthday yesterday, took full advantage of the position switch. He entered the game in the 12th minute as the Kewpies left forward, but Baker could be spotted all over the field.


His second assist came in the 21st minute, when he gained possession of the ball near the right touchline and passed to senior forward Evan Camden. Camden held off one defender and beat the goalie far post to tie the score 2-2.


In the 33rd minute, Smith-Cotton’s Raul Estrada ran on to a long free kick and appeared to have a breakaway. But Baker raced down the left sideline and stripped the ball from Estrada in front of the Hickman goal.


"I like playing outside because it gives me more space to move in and out," said Baker who has two goals and three assists on the season. "In the center I feel kind of restricted because I’m not used to playing in the center. I’ve always played on the wing."


Baker’s first assist almost came in the game’s 14th minute when his pass to Jervis Atagana created a breakaway opportunity. Atagana’s shot was saved by Tigers’ goalkeeper Ashton Barton, but Baker collected the rebound and was fouled. He took the free kick just outside the Tigers’ goal box and chipped it towards Atagana.


This time the junior forward didn’t miss. Atagana cut in front of Barton and headed the ball into the back of the net in the 15th minute to cut Smith-Cotton’s lead to 2-1.


Baker’s goal came with under two minutes to play in the first half. He beat Tommy Tally in a foot race down the left side and then Baker slid the ball past Barton with his right foot to put the Kewpies ahead 4-2.


"His touch was really good, and he was taking people on pretty consistently," Atagana said.
Hickman’s third goal was scored in the 38th minute by Mason Morawitz. The Tigers argued Morawitz was offside, but the referee disagreed. Taylor Cox knocked in a cross in the 47th minute to score the fifth goal.


Before Baker entered the match, Hickman trailed 2-0. Smith-Cotton scored in the fifth minute when Ruben Perez headed a free kick over goalkeeper Justin Schmidt. Six minutes later, the Tigers scored again. Isia Ramirez received a long pass from Perez, waited for the defense to commit and then laid it off for Estrada. Schmidt got beat by Estrada’s low shot and was then pulled in favor of Thomaz DeSouza.


"I had a goalie who had made two bad decisions, and I needed him to think about it," Thornburg said.


Schmidt returned to play the entire second half and made a number of fine plays, including a diving one-handed save on a bending free kick in the 53rd minute.


But the real hero was Baker, who said he planned to celebrate his four-point game and 16th birthday by going home and finishing his homework.

Smithton Classic Tournament (JV) (9.4 to 9.7.2006)

Smithton Classic St. Paul Lutheran is the favorite to win the Smithton soccer tournament this week. The Saints, who went 20-0 en route to a district championship last season, drew the No. 1 seed for the seven-team tournament. The Hickman junior varsity and La Monte join the Saints on the top half of the bracket. Those two teams will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday for the right to face St. Paul, which received a first-round bye, in the second semifinal on Thursday. In the other first-round matchups, Smithton will face Clinton at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, and the Marshall JV will meet Green Ridge at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The winners will meet in the first semifinal at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The championship game is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Qunicy, Ill., Tournament (8.31 to 9.1.2007)

Quincy, Ill., Tournament: Hickman dropped its first two tournament games against Illinois teams but finished with a 2-1 win over Webster Groves yesterday.

Evan Camden scored both goals in Hickman’s win, the first off an assist from Matt Baker and the second off a cross from Taylor Cox. Justin Schmidt played all but the final 10 minutes in goal for the win. Thomaz DeSouza allowed a late Webster Groves goal, but the Kewpies (1-3) held on.

Earlier in the day, Matt Baker scored an unassisted goal in a 4-1 loss to Maine South. On Friday, Mason Morawitz scored on a header in a 4-1 loss to Niles North.

Hickman plays Smith-Cotton at home Tuesday.

Rolla vs Hickman (8.20.2007)

Rolla 4, Hickman 2: After falling behind 2-0 in the first 20 minutes, the Kewpies fought back and tied the score with goals from Harrison Cunningham and Evan Camden. However, they could not preserve the draw as Rolla scored again in the first half and once more in the second.

Goalkeeper Justin Schmidt made 14 saves for the Kewpies.
